About this app
An interactive codex of historical ciphers and cryptography
Read full description
Long before screens glowed, secrets traveled by quill and cunning — hidden inside shifted letters, rotating disks, and grids only the initiated could read. Obscura is a small lantern held over that shadowed history: a hand-bound codex of the ciphers that guarded love letters, war plans, and buried fortunes across the centuries. Each entry reads like a page from a spymaster's private notebook, unhurried and lamplit, inviting you to lean closer and learn how the message was truly meant to be read. The codex opens into four quiet chambers. Browse the Archive of historical ciphers — Caesar shifts, the Vigenère table, Alberti's disk, the Playfair square — each with its story, its era, and the clever weakness that eventually undid it. Step to the Cipher Wheel, a working brass-toned disk you can turn to encode or decode your own short messages and share them as a puzzle. Lock your favorite ciphers behind a biometric Vault that only your fingerprint reopens, and test your eye in short quizzes that reveal a plaintext hidden in plain sight. Soft parchment tones, brass accents, and slow transitions keep the whole experience calm, tactile, and faintly conspiratorial.
